On February 9, 1995, Dr. Bernard Harris emerged from Space Shuttle Discovery and entered history as the first African American to perform a spacewalk. The achievement was a landmark in the continuing effort to broaden participation in the American space program. It was also the culmination of a career built at the intersection of medicine, scientific research, human spaceflight, and public service.
Bernard Anthony Harris, Jr. was born on June 26, 1956, in Temple, Texas. He spent important portions of his childhood in San Antonio and on the Navajo Nation, where his mother worked as an educator. Those early experiences exposed him to communities in which educational and professional opportunities were not distributed equally, an awareness that would later shape his commitment to expanding access to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Harris became fascinated by space exploration during the Apollo era. Like millions of young Americans, he watched astronauts travel beyond Earth and imagined participating in that work himself. Yet the astronaut corps he saw did not reflect the full diversity of the nation. No African American had yet flown in space, and few visible examples suggested that a Black child from Texas could realistically expect to become an astronaut.
Rather than abandon the ambition, Harris began building the scientific foundation necessary to pursue it. He graduated from Sam Houston High School in San Antonio in 1974 and attended the University of Houston, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in biology in 1978. His growing interest in human physiology led him toward medicine and toward a question that would shape much of his professional life: what happens to the human body when it leaves Earth?
Harris earned his medical degree from the Texas Tech University School of Medicine in 1982. He then completed a residency in internal medicine at the Mayo Clinic in 1985. The training demanded rigorous scientific judgment, careful observation, and the ability to make consequential decisions within complex systems—skills that would later prove essential aboard the Space Shuttle.
Following his residency, Harris received a National Research Council fellowship at NASA's Ames Research Center in California. There, he studied musculoskeletal physiology and disuse osteoporosis, conditions closely related to the loss of bone and muscle experienced by astronauts in microgravity. His medical career and his aspiration to travel into space were no longer separate pursuits. Each strengthened the other.
In 1987, Harris joined NASA's Johnson Space Center as a clinical scientist and flight surgeon. His responsibilities included studying human adaptation to spaceflight and developing countermeasures that could help astronauts remain healthy during extended missions. He served as project manager for exercise countermeasures, examining how carefully designed physical activity could reduce the physiological effects of prolonged weightlessness.
Harris also trained as a flight surgeon at the Aerospace School of Medicine at Brooks Air Force Base in San Antonio. Unlike physicians practicing solely in hospitals or clinics, aerospace medical specialists must consider how isolation, acceleration, confined environments, altered gravity, and life-support systems affect human performance. That expertise placed Harris within a comparatively small group of physicians prepared to contribute directly to human spaceflight.
NASA selected Harris as an astronaut candidate in January 1990. He completed the demanding program of technical instruction, survival preparation, spacecraft-systems training, and flight-readiness evaluation and became an astronaut in July 1991. As a mission specialist, he would be responsible not for piloting the Shuttle, but for operating complex systems, conducting experiments, managing scientific payloads, and performing tasks outside the spacecraft.
Harris made his first flight aboard Space Shuttle Columbia on STS-55, which launched on April 26, 1993. The mission carried the German Spacelab D-2 laboratory and supported dozens of investigations in physical science, biology, materials research, robotics, and human physiology. Harris served as a member of the payload crew, helping conduct experiments during ten days in orbit.
The mission demonstrated the international character of scientific exploration. American and German crew members worked together aboard a spacecraft carrying research contributed by investigators from several nations. For Harris, the flight also represented the realization of a childhood ambition: he had become both a physician studying the human response to space and an astronaut experiencing that environment firsthand.
Two years later, Harris returned to orbit aboard Space Shuttle Discovery on STS-63. He served as payload commander, giving him primary responsibility for coordinating the mission's scientific activities. The flight was an early milestone in the developing partnership between the United States and Russia and became the first Space Shuttle mission to rendezvous with the Russian space station Mir.
The close approach to Mir required precision, trust, and cooperation between nations that had spent much of the Space Age as rivals. Techniques demonstrated during Shuttle-Mir missions helped prepare NASA and its international partners for the later assembly and operation of the International Space Station.
STS-63 also included an extravehicular activity by Harris and astronaut Michael Foale. On February 9, 1995, the two astronauts exited Discovery to evaluate spacesuit modifications, procedures for working in extreme cold, and techniques related to handling large objects in preparation for future space-station construction.
The spacewalk lasted four hours and thirty-eight minutes. When Harris passed through the Shuttle's airlock and entered open space, he became the first African American to perform an extravehicular activity.
The historic significance of the moment reached far beyond a single mission. Harris occupied a place that had once seemed institutionally inaccessible to Black Americans: not merely aboard a spacecraft, but outside it, visibly participating in the work of building humanity's future in space.
Across his two missions, Harris logged more than 438 hours in space. He left NASA in April 1996, but his career continued to connect healthcare, technology, business leadership, and education. He held executive positions in science and healthcare organizations, supported emerging medical and technology companies, and became a prominent advocate for increasing minority participation in STEM fields.
Through the Harris Foundation and related educational initiatives, he helped provide students with access to summer science programs, mentoring, scholarships, and hands-on learning. These efforts reflected a conviction formed through his own experience: children are more likely to pursue demanding futures when they can see those futures represented, receive meaningful preparation, and encounter adults who believe they belong.
Harris's historic spacewalk remains the most widely recognized moment of his career, but it does not stand alone. His larger contribution lies in connecting exploration with human health and personal achievement with responsibility to those who follow.

When Harris performed his spacewalk in 1995, the achievement changed the visible boundaries of American exploration. A generation of students could now see an African American physician and astronaut working outside a spacecraft above Earth. His presence did not erase the inequities that had limited earlier pioneers, but it enlarged the range of futures that young people could plausibly imagine for themselves.
Harris also understood that representation must be accompanied by access. His later work in STEM education moved beyond inspiration alone, creating opportunities for students to study, experiment, receive mentorship, and prepare for scientific careers. He used the visibility earned through spaceflight to help others acquire the tools needed to pursue their own ambitions.
